RFI in construction
What is an RFI in construction?
An RFI is a numbered request for information used to resolve a missing, conflicting or ambiguous point before it disrupts construction.
Definition
A request for information gives one open technical or contractual question a responsible party, deadline and answer history. It usually references the drawing, specification, location or decision that needs clarification.
A useful RFI register shows draft, open, answered and closed items, plus whether the question threatens cost, schedule or both. The answer remains attached so the team can later reconstruct why the work followed a particular interpretation.
An RFI asks a question; an approval accepts a decision
An RFI seeks clarification. An approval records acceptance of a document, option or proposed action. The same issue may pass through both steps, but they are different responsibilities and should not share one vague status.

How an RFI register keeps the answer usable
Home Builder Software numbers each RFI, records the question, responsible party, due date, cost or schedule impact and answer. Filters keep overdue open questions visible while closed items preserve the project history.
